For the love of lidos

We’ve talked previously about the renaissance being enjoyed by open air swimming and lidos, and it seems our love of outdoor swimming has continued to blossom. Read more at the renaissance of outdoor swimming

Lifeguards for lidos and outdoor pools

The Cold Water Swimming Championships 2017

The Cold Water Swimming Championships 2017 held this month tells us that there are enough of us around who like to jump into an outdoor pool that is advertising a pool temperature of 1.5 degrees. For those who partake in these events they can apparently make a person feel so very alive (if suffering from a touch of numbness in the extremities at the same time).

Lidos and outdoor swimming

The love affair with outdoor swimming has taken a strong root in the local community in many areas around the country. The venue that hosted the championships is one that is supported by The South London Swimming Club who work closely with the local authorities to ensure the pool remains a valuable resource for the local community. Tooting Bec Lido is the largest fresh water pool in England and the swimming club works hard to ensure it will remain open for future generations.

Another community that saw the importance of an outdoor pool is in Cornwall. The Jubilee Pool  which had been open since 1935 fell into such a state of disrepair that by 1992 when a proposal to cover the pool was announced it inspired the local community to save it. A local architect collaborated with other supporters to get the pool listed status, they then sought grants to contribute to restoring the pool.  After many years of fundraising and repairs the pool was opened last summer by H.R.H. Prince Charles and has been much used and loved by the local community.

In Yorkshire the Friends of Ilkley Lido campaign to keep their local lido in the spotlight and continue to raise funding towards the upkeep of the pool.

So what is it about these outdoor lidos/pool that continue to inspire the passions of the local people around them? Is it the opportunity to mix with and speak to people? Is it in this increasingly technical age that sometimes it is simply lovely to spend some leisure time with friends and family outside and in a pool? Whatever the reason, a big thank you is due to all those who had the passion and drive to save our lidos for us and for future generations.

Do you need lifeguards for your lido?

We asked Latoya and Amy (our team responsible for staffing lidos and pools) about their experiences with outdoor pools they said:

No matter the weather, we’re always surprised by how busy they are. The demand for qualified lifeguards in the build up to the Lido season is astronomical and we’re already speaking to businesses about resourcing for their sites. Preparation is key!

If we could give any advice to people running outdoor lidos, it would be “don’t wait until you’ve run out of lifeguards before you look at contingency plans!” All too often, we’ll get calls mid-season from lidos desperately needing lifeguards and sometimes it’s too late! The rate at which lifeguards are qualifying and registering for work is well below the demand and although we wish we could, we can’t create people!

If you call us before March, we’ll guarantee you’ll be in a better position in July!
