Jodie to run 5k for Cancer Research UK

This weekend, 4Leisure Recruitment resourcer Jodie and mum Michele will be running Race for Life in Hillingdon to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Race for Life is the UK’s biggest ladies only fundraising event. Starting in 1994 as a single 5k race in Battersea Park, London, Race for Life has expanded into over 200 regional races which include 5k and 10k races, half-marathons, marathons, and the popular Pretty Muddy, a pink version of endurance events such as Tough Mudder.

Races are more about participation than record breaking times – you are encouraged to “walk, jog, or run” a 5k, and women of all ages, sizes, and ability take part. Since Race for Life began, over 6 million women have taken part, and over £493 million has been raised for Cancer Research UK

Facts about Race for Life

  • A 5k Race for Life in 2001 was Jane Tomlinson’s first ever fundraising event after her cancer diagnosis. She went on to raise over £1.75 million for charity.
  • Runners wear a card in memory of those for who they are running.
  • Pink is the colour of Race for Life. Participants are known as the Pink Army
  • Following complaints about the ladies only event being discriminatory, a Run for Moore in memory of the late footballer Bobby Moore was introduced, but discontinued in 2010. Boys under 12 are allowed to take part in the ladies race after a rule change in 2012.

Jodie and Michele have met their fundraising target ahead of this weekend’s race but welcome more. All goes to a fantastic charity who work to find a cure for the numerous cancers that exist, and also develop new treatments for cancer patients. They also advise people about cancer, and act as advisors to government health policy makers.

IMATS London 2016

IMATS (International Make-Up Artist Trade Show) London is a trade exhibition for the make-up industry’s biggest names where they will share their skills, secrets and stories. Now in its 15th year IMATS brings together film, fashion, TV and theater artists with budding make-up artists.

There will be make-up classes and live demos at the show, and top make-up brands will sell the latest and greatest products.

Cutting-edge beauty artist Alex Box will unveil her latest project at IMATS London. The former Illamasqua creative director’s work has appeared inVogue and Won the faces of Lady Gaga and Kate Moss and on the catwalks for Alexander McQueen, Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel. She’ll do a make-up demo and spend one-on-one time with attendees.

Love make-up shopping? You’re in luck: International brands including Urban Decay, Yves Saint Laurent Beauté, Bobbi Brown Pro and Make Up For Ever Paris will unveil new products and offer old favorites.

In the Battle of the Brushes student make-up competitions, international make-up students will race to create winning looks. This year’s beauty competition is themed Carnival/Circus; the character competition is themed Four Decades of Star Wars. And the Make-up Museum will showcase creations from well-loved films and TV shows.

IMATS London 2016 looks to be another fantastic event and Ali and Hayley-Jo are very much looking forward to seeing what’s new in the world of make-up, and meeting lots of new make-up professionals. If you see them, please do go and say hello.

How to…..attract candidates in a flat leisure job market

How to attract great leisure industry candidatesI don’t know about you, but I’ve noticed a reduction in the number of skilled candidates recently. Whether this is because leisure companies are getting better at hanging on to their skilled, experienced staff (very important in a people-centric industry) or less people are choosing to pursue a career in leisure, I’m not really sure yet, but as one of the UK’s leading leisure recruiters, we’re certainly seeing the pool of job-seeking leisure professionals shrink, while demand for good leisure staff is as high as ever. Well, we do like a challenge!

This doesn’t help you if you’re looking for skilled staff to push your leisure business forward and expand, or to fill gaps where staff have moved on to pastures new. If you’re finding that recruiting the right staff for your business is more challenging than usual, then you’re not alone.

Here’s what you can do to give yourself the best chance of finding great candidates, and making sure your preferred candidates say yes to your offer.


Have a look at whether your pay offer is competitive. Check out what your competitors are paying (especially those who tempted away your last skilled worker) and see if what you’re offering stacks up. Yes, you may have been competitive 18 months ago, but things can change quickly. Recent introductions such as the National Living Wage have altered the game considerably, especially for those at the lower end of the pay scale.

While pay is fundamentally important to lots of employees, if you’re on a strict wage budget then it’s not always possible just to solve a problem by throwing money at it. Can you offer other things which could tip the balance in your favour?

Free membership and use of your facilities may not appeal to everyone, but if the gym is something you own and control, then it’s worth a try. Same for product based companies – can you offer a substantial discount on your products?

If you’re a big company, you could negotiate a group buying discount which you can pass on to your employees – private healthcare is popular, or store discount cards so your staff can save money on their essential outgoings.

If you’re a small company or a start-up then what about offering share options in your company as a bonus, or for longer service? This is a great incentive for staff to help make sure your business is a success, and gives the staff a reward for their hard work.

Working hours

There is more demand for flexible working hours. Employers have an obligation to take seriously all requests for flexible working, and where the employer cannot or is not willing to help the employee out, then that employee is more likely to start looking for someone who can.

If you can offer ‘better’ hours, then you may give yourself an advantage when attracting good candidates. Listen to what your candidates want in terms of flexibility – maybe they just want to work fewer weekends, or have the option to leave early a couple of days a week. Some flexibility on your part may make working for your business that little bit more of a viable option.

If you have a great pay offer, some nice benefits, and offer a degree of flexible working then you sound like a great option for good candidates. If you’re not shouting about this, then you should be! Make sure that candidates know what a great company you are to work for. Great marketing should sell your brand and your business not only to paying customers, but also to potential employees, so get your company out there and make sure that your job vacancies get under the noses of the right people.

We are proud to announce our successful partnership with The Massage Company.

The Massage Company has been formed by two spa industry leaders, Charlie Thompson and Elliot Walker, and their first site – in Camberley, Surrey – is having its grand opening this week. As official recruiters to The Massage Company, representatives from 4Leisure Recruitment will be attending. We are happy to say that we have been able to completely staff the Camberley centre in time! Great work by the spa recruitment team in supporting this amazing new concept start-up.

The Massage Company plan on rolling the business out as a franchise, and have set their sights on having 30 sites within five years. We will watch their development with interest, and wish them all the best for the future.

Martyn gets on his bike for medical research

Last Sunday saw our own Martyn Senior start training for his first 100-mile bike ride in aid of Action Medical Research for Children.

Action Medical Research finds and funds research to help hundreds of thousands of sick and disabled children who need help. The charity has been helping children for over 60 years and has invested over £110m in vital research and development to improve the quality of life for children

Currently the charity has over £11m invested in over 75 projects around the country. The research being funded covers a vast spectrum of ailments and diseases; from meningitis to brain cancer, epilepsy to sickle cell, each and every project is striving to save and change the lives of children through medical research.

The charity explains that ‘surprisingly medical research to help children is poorly funded in the UK. Action Medical Research has a critical job to do in helping fill this gap to protect children’.

This annual fundraising event raises lots of much needed funds. Martyn started his training last weekend with a cheeky little 25 miles around the Kent countryside and he promises to keep us up to date with some training pictures and regular updates. He is hoping to cover a good 300 to 400 miles over the next few weeks in preparation for the event.

Professional Beauty 2016

Last weekend, I hopped over to London Excel to attend Professional Beauty 2016, a two-day expo of spa and beauty businesses. It’s one of Europe’s leading events for beauty and spa professionals, attracting over 30,000 visitors and seeing exhibits from over 800 beauty and spa brands.

I was invited to sit on the panel at a talk called “How our company is developing. What we feel Colleges should focus on to meet the ever changing and diverse needs of the Beauty industry?” with other spa industry professionals such as Ceri Silk from Saks Hair & Beauty, and Helena Field from the Mandarin Oriental spa in London, as part of a morning of talks about education within the spa and beauty sector. As usual, it was very helpful and provided a fantastic insight into the challenges of providing relevant and industry-specific skills to budding and developing spa therapists.

So what were the findings from the talk? Well, there was a strong emphasis from the panel that there is a lack of commercial skills being trained in colleges, which is an issue we’ve discussed previously. However, frontline educators are aware of this but haven’t got the funding or the time to deliver those skills. Resources are often stretched thin and demands of employers are growing.

I suggested that there was a shift towards “total wellness” by the larger spa operators and getting the basics right without the need for the peripheral treatments. However, smaller spas and salons are looking for better value for money with the increase in Living Wage. They want more skills and experience for the money, so we’re advising therapists to perfect the core skills first to make sure they have a decent understanding of what’s required in each role, and then bolt on usable job-specific qualifications to add value.

The general consensus was that there is too much in the way of celebrity endorsed trends such as media make-up qualifications which lead people into qualifying with no jobs available to them. It’s important that the education sector train people to do that jobs that are available and that are in demand to make them more employable, and more useful to the spa and beauty sector.

It was an honour to once again help the development of the workforce to meet the demands of the spa and beauty industry and its employers. I hope that our insight into the gaps in skills supply that spa and beauty employers are experiencing will help inform spa and beauty teaching policy in a meaningful way.

Sometimes you just get the feeling that as much as you love your job, you’d like to do something more. Maybe you’d like to be in charge for a while, learn high-end skills, maybe even run the entire company? Yes, you may ‘only’ be a leisure assistant, or a junior spa therapist right now, but your potential is screaming at you to move on up.

Then you come up against a brick wall – your company doesn’t have the space for you to grow, it doesn’t offer training opportunities, it doesn’t nurture its staff, and the MD has no plans to move aside any time soon. As good as you may be at your job, it looks like you’re going to be in it for the foreseeable future.

For many people, this isn’t a bad thing at all; job security and stability is a huge plus point, particularly those who need the steady income, but for those who want to grow in skills and earning power, being part of a company that just doesn’t have those opportunities is frustrating, and breeds resentment. It’s time to start looking for a job with better prospects.

A new leisure job for better prospects

Companies that have limited opportunity for development can be stifling environments to those who want to flourish. This doesn’t mean that the company is badly managed at all. In fact, it might be the most stable business around, but for those who value learning and progression over stability, it can start to feel like a prison, and that’s no way to make the most of people’s skills.

But where to go? If you’re looking to progress in your career, then finding a company with room to develop is a good start. You may have to make a sideways move, or even a backwards one to get in to the company, but look at the potential. Starting in a company in a job which isn’t particularly glamourous or taxing can open up huge opportunity. It’s not unknown for someone who starts as a lifeguard to end up as company director, for example. It has been done, but it won’t have been done with a company who isn’t open to bringing on its employees and who doesn’t provide the opportunity to grow and develop.

How to provide better prospects

If your staff are leaving you, and it seems to be the best ones first, then you may have a problem with employee development and engagement – the strongest rats are the ones who can jump from the sinking ship first, and they will!

Providing opportunity for growth and promotion to your best employees isn’t always easy – the jobs have to be there within your company for people to have the chance to do them. However, if the higher-level management jobs do exist then you could, for example, encourage promotion from within the team rather than bring in an external candidate to fill the position. Yes, your existing staff may not have the exact skills you need to be able to fulfil the role, but could you have provided training? This will show your employees that the prospects are there, should they be in a position to consider them.

Think about succession activity in advance of any vacancies. If you know your senior supervisor is going to retire in a few years, then find someone younger who can be trained in the interim as a potential successor, for example. It could be better to keep skilled employees with you who already know the company culture than bring in outsiders who could take some settling in. Not always, but worth considering.

You could provide your own in-house training to employees, or arrange for an external course at a local college or training centre, or try a correspondence course. Different types of training have advantages and disadvantages and you should choose the one which works best for your company, and its employees. It might be that you have to offer different options to employees with differing circumstances, or use a mix of in-house and external. Either way, if your employee takes it upon themselves to arrange their own training and development, they will not have so much as a strong sense of loyalty to you and your company. Ignore training and development at your peril!
