On 27th Feb, 4Leisure Recruitment Director Jean Wing Hing and Spa and Beauty Recruiter Ali McAlister attended Professional Beauty London, possibly the biggest spa and beauty trade show in the UK.
Jean was there to talk on the education forum and share his experience as a spa and beauty industry recruitment specialist. Did you get to hear him?
The main take-aways from the talk were……
- Getting new entrants into the world of spa and beauty who can do the basics well is becoming more of a focus. Employers are keen to recruit spa and beauty school graduates who have a solid skillset in the basics – the rest can be learnt as you go along.
- There is concern however that this ‘ongoing training’ is being disproportionately carried out by the larger spa and beauty companies who have the resources to do so.
- More role models are needed for spa and beauty students to help them engage and choose better career pathways. The different opportunities available to graduates beyond the basics needs much more promotion.
- There are more people trying to train in celebrity make-up courses than jobs available in this sub-sector. The gap between what people want to study and what skills the industry is currently demanding needs to close.
After a great debate from all the panel and the audience, Jean then moved on to the College Zone, where he was the very last speaker right at the heart of the show. He filled the 15 minute slot with his wisdom on opportunities for students and graduates in the spa and beauty sector.
