Telephone Interviews

Phone interview

With the pace that the leisure industry moves at these days,Telephone Interviews are becoming a more common method of screening. They are often used to narrow a large pool of candidates who will be invited to formal interview.

They aim to test basic competencies as well as personality and enthusiasm so it's essential you're prepared before the interview starts.

You should prepare for a Telephone Interview in much the same way that you would for a normal interview. Here are a few basics to remember:

  • Make sure you know when you're expecting the call and "book out" the time so you're not interupted. Evict kids & pets!
  • Make sure you're in a quiet place with good phone signal.
  • Have your CV ready to hand and be prepared to answer questions about it.
  • Have a pen and paper ready to take notes.
  • Familiarise yourself with the job description and research the company.
  • Be prepapred to talk about your strengths and achievements.

Once the interview starts, you need to make a good first impression. Remember that Telehone Interviews are harder than normal interviews as you don't have the benefit of the body language that usually enhances communication.

  • Keep smiling! Smiling will project a positive image to the listener and will change the tone of your voice.
  • Speak slowly and enunciate clearly.
  • Try to use the interviewers name.
  • Ask for feedback after the interview and if it's positive, ask if it would be possible to meet face to face.
  • Thank the interviewer for their time.

Remember that your interviewer will be constructing an image of you as an employee so think hard about the image of yourself you want to project before you start.
